A trip to Seattle requires a ferry ride. In our case there will be two during our stay here. Today’s ride involves going to Vashon
Island to visit with my cousin Barb.
She’s lived in her house on Vashon Island for 36 years! I have always loved two things about my
summer visits to her house-the bay window in the kitchen with her latest travel
souvenirs and the flower gardens she puts in. Well, of course I love seeing her also and today’s visit is
no different. The beauty of the ferry to Vashon is that it runs every twenty minutes so the wait and ride are minor and then we are "on-island."
The day starts off cloudy and we grab jackets before
heading off with temperatures in the mid-60s that feel cool (at least to me)
after all the heat we’ve experienced.
We stop for Stella and she guides us down through Seattle’s
waterfront past the newly added Ferris wheel, several new shining glass
skyscrapers and the Pike Street Public Market famous for its colorful veggies and
flowers along with its fish market.
My cousin has prepared a delicious lunch of sandwiches, potato
salad, orange flesh honeydew melon AND homemade blackberry pie. Orange flesh honeydew melon (a cross
between a cantaloupe and honeydew melon) looks just like and has the texture of cantaloupe melon but
with the taste of the sweet honeydew melon-combining the perfect attributes
of each of its melon sources. Try
it if you haven’t already. It is
delicious. There is also something
about homemade piecrust that is irresistible. While not good for the weight loss program, it is my
favorite of desserts (well, right up there at least with chocolate candy and white cake
that is…)
Jim helped with Barb’s computer and then we cruised uptown
on Vashon to show him “Main Street” and to get a loaf of bread for Stella. The rain held off all day and we had a
super time. We wound around in
rush hour traffic coming home but because of the traffic delays we saw a bit more of the construction going on
everywhere in Seattle, impressing us with the
growth that seems to be going on everywhere in the city. Seattle is “moving and shaking” these days and we are glad
to see it doing so well.
I so miss Seattle
