We are back on the road today, traveling two hundred miles east over the Cascade Mountains to central Washington and Moses Lake. We leave fir trees and pine behind to greet the desert of Washington after crossing the Columbia Gorge.
Moses Lake was once a small and shallow inland salt lake that grew to a fresh water lake of 18 miles long by 1 mile wide with over 120 miles of shoreline and covering 6,500 acres after a dam was built in the early 1900's here. Not only have people come to depend upon it, but to the south end of the lake and in several lakes further south vast amounts of migratory birds also enjoy the watery world created here.
Larson AFB activated in 1942 and deactivated in 1966 here, now serves as one of the largest airports in the country for world-class heavy jet training and testing by the Boeing Company, the U.S. Military and NASA. It has a runway 13,500 feet long and covers 4,700 acres!
We drove around town to see this town after dinner and saw a road show parade of antique cars and roadsters following them to a local park near our RV park to inspect them closer after picking up an ice cream cone en route. The car event is a new happening in town we were told by one of the locals who participated.
Nice little town to visit. Tomorrow we will head further east.
